Veeder-Root Approves the
KWA LS-2003 Leak Detector Tester

LS-2003 Approved for Functional Testing of WPLLD and PLLD Electronic Line Leak Detectors

July 14, 2003 - Veeder-Root has updated its Operability Testing Guide to include procedures for testing PLLD and WPLLD electronic line leak detectors using the KWA LS-2003 Leak Detector Tester.
According to Veeder-Root, the updated testing procedures are necessary for testing components of UST systems to "verify the equipment's operability for leak detection at 3 gph (gallons per hour), 0.2 gph, and 0.1 gph."

Technicians with Veeder-Root Level 2/3 certification can use these procedures in the field to determine the operability of Veeder-Root line leak detection systems. Users of the LS-2003 must also be certified as leak detector testers by KWA.

Jeff Wilcox, environmental engineer and LS-2003 trainer stated that it has been KWA's policy to certify users of the LS-2003 equipment. "It is important that technicians have a good understanding of how leak detectors operate in order to field-test them correctly. Training of technicians and the use of appropriate leak simulation equipment is the key to testing leak detectors correctly." KWA's training program requires all certified technicians to pass a written test to demonstrate their understanding of leak detector operations and regulations. They must also successfully demonstrate that they can test both electronic and mechanical line leak detectors.

Ken Wilcox, president of KWA and developer of the LS-2003, explained that the LS-2003 was designed with the technician in mind. "This equipment gives technicians the crucial information that they need to make sure that a station's leak detection equipment is working correctly. There are several things about the LS-2003 that make it a nice piece of equipment for the field-technician. First, it's small. Second, it's built into an air and watertight case so that you can pack it in your truck without choking on fumes. Third, it's customizable. You can add or replace any accessory that you want to the unit because of the way that we built in the quick connects."

About the KWA LS-2003 Leak Detector Tester
Designed to help service organizations and tank operators meet EPA guidelines requiring annual testing of all line leak detectors, the LS-2003 is capable of testing any mechanical or electronic line leak detector. The unit works by introducing leaks into pipelines at rates of 3.0, 0.2, or 0.1 gal/h to determine if a leak detector can correctly identify the presence of a leak. The LS-2003 incorporates technology that KWA has used since 1989 to conduct third-party evaluations of leak detection methods.
